About our cause

Mental ill health affects 1 in 4 people, which is equal to 60,000 people in Croydon.

Hear Us is a charity run by people with mental health challenges, supporting adults with serious mental ill health to access financial, health and social inclusion support within the borough of Croydon. We act to increase awareness and fight mental health stigma within Croydon.

We currently support about 3500 people within Croydon who have mental health challenges and face barriers to involvement in society and employment. Our 8 staff have all had experience of serious mental ill-health and we have about 40 volunteers who are either current or former recipients of mental health services. We have 6 trustees, 5 of whom have lived experience of mental ill-health. So most of us have been where our clients are now and we can use our experiences of managing mental illness and overcoming barriers in our way to enable people facing those challenges now to see there is hope for a good future despite our mental health disabilities.

We provide 4 main projects to support people in their journey of recovery. The Welfare Surgeries Project supports people with mental health challenges to apply for benefits and other financial entitlements. We encourage people to do it for themselves whilst providing support for those that need it. The Linkworking Project enables people in crisis to raise issues with service providers so their care and treatment meets their needs through listening, supporting and signposting. We give vulnerable service users a greater voice the quality of their care and treatment received on wards and in the community leading to improved decision-making and crucially hope. We hold 10 Open Forum sessions a year where service providers, service users and carers meet to provide information and raise issues of concern. The Reachout project helps to reduce stigma through training, supporting and informing public sector organisations such as the police and the wider community.

We want to be able to reach and support more people going through mental ill-health within Croydon especially those who are most isolated in society.

We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our services. It will be used to ensure people with mental ill health become less isolated in the community and have access to social activities and have money to put food on the table and keep the lights on!

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Yours sincerely,

Tim Oldham
